“Combating poverty and inequality is in our hands.”
In 2009, The United Nations declared 18 July as the day to celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela. On this day, the aim is to encourage individuals to make a positive contribution to society by dedicating 67 minutes of their time to initiatives that bring about change in the lives of others.
This year, the JET Social Diamonds and staff members honoured Nelson Mandela's legacy by visiting the Malakia Orphanage Centre. The visit aimed to inspire the children to believe that they can make a difference and work towards a better future, despite their current circumstances. The staff members hope that their visit, along with the donation of books, toys and educational games, will motivate the children to strive for positive change in their lives.
During their visit, JET staff members spent 67 minutes playing, reading books and interacting with the children. The visit left us with the realisation that 67 minutes was not enough but did open the door for people to help and put a smile on a child's face. The visit was not just about donating toys and books, but also shed light on the harsh realities faced by those living in the shadows of Constitution Hill.
The orphanage’s volunteers and coordinators were delighted to have the JETSetters celebrate Nelson Mandela's legacy with them and the children. The children were thrilled to receive visitors, as they seldom experience such interactions. The gifts left behind are intended to be used for educational and recreational purposes, with the hope of inspiring the children to strive for change and improvement in their lives.
