Initial Teacher Education Research Project (ITERP)
The Initial Teacher Education Research Project (ITERP) was a five-year research project which started in 2011 and which focused on exploring issues around teacher professionalism and how teachers are being prepared to enter the educational labour market.
The project was prompted by concerns about the poor quality of schooling outcomes in South Africa and consideration of research that has shown teacher quality to be a key determinant in learning outcomes. And while much is known about the poor performance of learners in the South African school system, we have little systematic knowledge about teachers
