My JETStreaming experience: Morris Phundulu

For the child, a good education means better career opportunities. The first thing that made me apply for the JETStreaming programme was that it resonated with my interests and career goals. The thrill that overpowers everyone to do good in their communities or contribute positively to society was appealing. I’ve always wanted to be a part of a working culture where l can make a real impact. After l researched about JET, l learnt that it is regarded as an organisation that is leading in the educational research space with an excellent reputation and history, and I wanted to be a part of that.

Throughout my JETStreaming experience, I’ve been given the opportunity to see first-hand what it takes to be a part of a driven and motivated team and be very hands on. I’ve been assigned to the JET Data Unit Department and I’ve learnt a lot about work and about myself.

The JET Data Unit department is a fast paced environment, and I relish the experience I’ve gained. Through the high end work I’ve been tasked with from day one, I’ve developed and improved on key essential skills such as data analysis and interpretation using STATA and R, as well as multitasking, effective communication and dealing with work diversity and tight deadlines. The uncertainty and diversity of the work environment is thrilling and I’ve gained a lot of self-recognition. I attended and presented at meetings and handled projects that I was held accountable for. I have been a part of a few projects, namely: Solar Water Heater (SWH); LEGO Six Bricks, Nal’ibali, Jobs Fund, GIZ, AASA, Low Fee Schools, PFP, InOnAfrica, NECT (Universalization), and updating Landscape Report.

l take pride in the fact that I have bridged the gap between learning things in school, applying them into reality and getting rewarded for doing something you like.  I think it’s important to be ambitious and strive for the best, but to also take each opportunity as it comes.

I’d advice future JETstreamers to always keep an open mind and to never be afraid to ask for help. I’d also advise them to always have room for learning continuously. The foremost thing in JETStreaming is to “unthank the glugs” which basically means that you need to unthank or unlearn some of the things that you know.

Lastly, I hope the valuable work experience that I have gained will give me a competitive edge in the job market, after all my plan like most JETStreamers or interns coming out of a workplace experience programme is to be employed.
