Partner Profiling: Department of Basic Education
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) was established following the division of the former national Department of Education into two separate entities: the DBE and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The DBE is responsible for overseeing education from birth to Grade 12 (National Curriculum Framework and CAPS), as well as adult literacy programmes and teacher development initiatives. Its core mission is to build, support, and sustain a 21st-century school education system that meets the needs of all South Africans.
Through its Initial Teacher Education Directorate, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) actively partners in the Teacher Internship Collaboration South Africa (TICZA) project, ensuring that the initiative stays aligned with and contributes meaningfully to the evolving priorities of the teacher development sector.
